Just thought I'd remind everyone that the baseball season starts Feb. 20th. UNCG will host Kent State for 3 over that weekend. KSU's team should be improved. BA has them ranked 18.

G managed to pick up quite a few of the better players in the state this year (and next year too) and their pitching staff should be very solid. If they can fill all of the holes left from graduation (I sense a trend here) they might make some noise in the SoCon. I have a feeling they'll be picked about 7th by coaches/media.

All-Access is showing 29 of the games this season for less than $25. Since I only can make it to a half dozen or so game every year, I think I'll end up buying it.

I guessed right. Rivals picks UNCG 7th in this article.

Quote:
UNC Greensboro has several hitters to replace this season, but should have a good weekend rotation with Greg Martin, Rob Gilliam and Greg Smith leading the charge. Impact newcomers to watch include freshman infielder Raymond Frias and freshman right-handed pitchers Matt Parish and Zach Furl.

I"ll try to get out to the stadium more rather than try all-access....seems everyone is constantly complaining about the quality of basketball games on it. the slower pace of baseball may work better though...

I've not had a bit of problems with All-access and home basketball games (I watched 1 from Florida a few weeks ago). It's the "syndicated" road games where I've had problems. Last night they kept telling me it was something on my web browser that was keeping it from working. I kept saying, "No, it's worked on this computer recently. It's on your end. Fix it." So, who knows. I may buy it, and I might not. I just know that I'll not be able to make it out to the park more than 5-6 times.

BTW ... media & coaches picked us 7th

A few pages to list before the season starts ...

- On Warren Nolan's site here's UNCG's page and the SoCon's page.
- Boyd's World has our SoS at #158
His RPI page (which hasn't started yet, obviously) is located here.

G starts off with Kent State today. Game time is 4 pm. Saturday & Sunday games are at 1. I think I'm going to go over to the basketball game tomorrow early and watch some baseball first.

Here's the preview from the website.

Quote:
• This season Spartan fans will see plenty of new faces on the 2009 squad. UNCG bolsters only seven upperclassmen this season after losing 10 players to graduation last year. The Spartans will take the field this season with 11 true freshman, four redshirt freshman and eight sophomores.

Ouch.

I posted this here because I think it affects baseball more than any other sport. I think (and hope) it refers to making conference series into double-headers next season (2010), so that if the economic situation does turn around, there won't be any need for the change.

They couldn't pull this off this season b/c the schedules were already made. I don't have any problem with it. I just wish they didn't have to start those Sunday games so early. If they didn't start until 2 or 3, I could make it over to quite a few of them. I understand why they do it, though. And that it's not going to change.

Those double headers will creat more parity in the conference b/c sweeps willbe very hard to come by.

I forgot to mention that today's game is free on Spartan all-access.

I'll just pretend like ti'spay back for the Samford basketball game where I got the run around.

BTW, the guy pitching for Kent State is freakin' huge.

G got drubbed yesterday by Kent State 18-2. Gillam walked a bunch of people in the first 3 innings and most of them scored. With such a young starting line up (and it is REALLY young) the pitching staff will have to be better than this for G to win games.

UNCG went 0-3 against KSU last weekend. The closest game was the Saturday game that went extra innings.

G also got lit up by Campbell in the mid-week game.

The Spartans haven't had much in the way of starting pitching. Shelton had a solid start on Saturday. Gilliam struggled in both starts. With this young of a line up, the pitchers are going to have to start locking down teams.

This weekend G has Princeton coming in for 3. UNCG swept them last year. Hopefully, we can get another sweep this year.

I don't think that they're going to get many of the games in this weekend. They've already moved Friday's game back to 6 (I think a cancellation is coming soon).

G won its first game of the season tonight when Pedro Leon hit a walk off double in the bottom of the 9th. Our RPI is up to 95 (thanks to Kent State going to Winthrop's tourney and winning a few games too). Obviously, there'll be a lot of movement in that for a few weeks. However, the SoCon already is positioned in 4th. I expect it'll end up in the same spot (8th) as it did last year.

G drops a mid-week game at Duke yesterday 11-3. I kept up with the game via the stat tracker at work. It's weird b/c G hits the ball fine. It just seems like we're playing small ball while the teams we play just mash the ball out of the park. I haven't checked, but I'd like to see the numebr of HR's given up by Spartan pitchers.

SoCon play starts (it's already started for a few teams) this weekend @ CofC.
